Glock Gen 6 - For a long time, the GLOCK G46 was a closely guarded secret that could only be found at government auctions. For the first time, the Austrian manufacturer offers a gun with a rotating barrel and a covered release system. We tested the new service pistol of the German state police, Saxony-Anhalt. Read on to find out what it was like at the shooting range!
The G46 is GLOCK's answer to the German Police Force's Technical Requirements (TR) for service pistols. It certainly comes a bit late, as most of the German federal states acquired the new generation of service pistols some time ago. Despite this, GLOCK managed to score at least one point in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt (see our article). About 8,600 G46 pistols will be delivered there by 2021. Rumor has it that the police of the time wrote the TR deliberately so that the internationally successful "class leader" from Austria would stand out.

On the G46 you can find the teeth on the front slide area and on the slide stop handle on the right side.

One of the key technical requirements that GLOCK has failed so far is that the gun can be disassembled without pulling the trigger. Not a huge disadvantage for experienced shooters after passing the security check, the police will probably see differently. At least the training theory can be taught that the trigger is only used for shooting. It also explains the protruding mechanism at the rear of the G46 slide, which caused a lot of rumors when the first pictures of the G46 made the rounds. A fire selector switch is quickly suggested, but the truth is more obvious if less sentimental as a cup release feature. Of course, the gun can be lowered only after the slide is pulled back a little. So accidental discharge, for example in the vagina, is completely impossible. To lower the gun, you need to operate a small lever on the left side of the grip, which various forums on the internet list as a manual safety.
The original new area for the GLOCK can also be found inside when the gun is disassembled. While all other pistols from the Austrian manufacturer employ a Browning-SIG-Peter locking system, the G46 is based on a rotary barrel. However, this has nothing to do with technical requirements. According to GLOCK, this principle has long been considered because it allows for a shorter barrel axis. In the past, several manufacturers tried the rotary system in their guns, such as B&T TSP, Colt All American, Beretta 8000 Cougar or Mauser M2, all of which have now disappeared from the market. Currently, the Italian Beretta PX-4Storm and the Slovak Grand Power K100 can still be found.
Compared to the G19 (left), it's easy to see how low the barrel axis is in a rotary action.
Although ingenious inventor John Moses Browning patented a revolver as early as 1897, the 1907 Roth-Stair was the first revolver to be produced in "large" quantities. You can also find a preloaded trigger there like a GLOCK. A very interesting gun, impressively demonstrating what was already possible at the time with significantly limited production capabilities. The Roth-Steier gun inevitably closes the circle again for Austria. By the way, rotary action pistols are said to be more accurate, because the barrel does not tilt or move back like in the Browning-SIG-Peter system, but only makes a rotary movement. The rotary locking system is said to be subject to high wear, especially if the locking surfaces or proper material properties are not properly selected. According to the manufacturer, the locking surfaces and locking material have been optimized. According to GLOCK, certification by the Ulm proof house revealed that the three guns with 10,000 rounds of high ammunition showed no cracks, damage or other abnormalities other than a flawless cycle (only 5 stops total).

First-time shooters of the G46 may not be particularly impressed with its trigger qualities. A look at the trigger scan clearly shows that a pull weight of about 137.56 oz / 3900 g and a trigger travel of 0.59" / 15 mm would be required to break the trigger. But unfortunately that's what the specs dictate with trigger resistance. At least 30 N, that's a trigger of about 104 oz / 2950 g Matches pull weight. According to TR, trigger travel should also be between 0.39"-0.59" / 10-15 mm, at least for the first shot. It's also worth noting that since we're currently in spec, trigger reset should be at least 0.157" / 4 mm. Whether this makes it easier for the user to hit the target or make the gun easier to handle remains to be seen. safe A rhetorical question for producers or users, you should take it lightly. As an option, GLOCK offers the G46 with a weight of 88.18 oz / 2.5 kg and a shortened trigger stroke.
Although the GLOCK 46 may seem a bit more complex, we manage with as few individual parts as possible, per the GLOCK philosophy. So the latest successors from Deuts-Wagram consist of 37 individual parts, so only 3 more than the G19. By the way, if you want to go deeper with the G46 and its rotary system, you can take a closer look at the published patent EP 3179193A1. We determined an indentation of 0.014"/0.36mm for strike impact on a copper compression cylinder using a chamber gauge supplied by Tribel, with an almost perfectly centered indentation. By the way, TR sets a minimum value of 0.011" / 0.3mm. Maximum eccentricity 0.007 inch / 0.2 mm.
However, the firing pin unit cannot be pulled out completely and therefore cannot be lost. Of course, this manipulation can only be done when the slide is open...
The size of the G46 is similar to the size of the G19, so the magazine holds 15 rounds. The grip immediately attracts attention due to the elongated grip spur. The highly durable nDLC coating (Diamond-like Carbon), which became standard in the 5th generation, is also available in this service version. The magazine release button is reversible for left-handers, and the slide stop lever can be found on either side, as on the GLOCK Gen5 pistols. The 3.9" / 100mm long barrel features the new GLOCK Marksman Barrel (GMB) profile, which ensures high accuracy. The firing pin, which was distinctively spear-shaped until Gen4, has given way to a round shape. The pistol comes with iron sights that include bright dots.

First contact with this series was at GLOCK, birthplace of the G46. We hit the home range following an invitation to Dutch Well which started with technical training. Here we were able to shoot the G46 and G19 with plenty of RUAG Action 4 ammo. Indeed, the G46 felt a little relaxed when shooting. The extra weight of 0.9 oz / 26 g compared to the G19 is probably not the reason. Apparently, the rotation of the barrel has a positive effect on the shooting behavior. Return home and check accuracy. Since the G46 is obviously a compact pistol, we chose a distance of 15 meters with a sandbag support for accuracy testing. 7 loads were used this time including 4 TR certified factory cartridges like the gun. RUAG Action 5 ammo with a 0.94"/ 24mm diameter, solid 94g bullet achieved the best average result of two groups of 5 rounds. Second place in the accuracy test remained in the same range: cartridges RUAG Action 4 and certified SeCas both achieved 1.3-inch / 33mm groups. 1.49" / The relatively light 89g MEN Quick Defense with 38mm achieved the highest energy value of all bullets tested at 511 J. The average for all loads was 1.53"/39mm. We didn't note any malfunctions with the G46, even during other dynamic exercises.
GLOCK apparently spared no expense or effort in developing a unique – and significant only in Germany – pistol designed specifically for TR guidance. God
